BLOOMFIELD, NJ — As Bloomfield continues to hash out a “master plan” for real estate development in the township, local youth are making sure their voices become part of the decision making process.

Last week, township officials hosted a presentation from the Center for Community Planning, a nonprofit organization that provides community planning education and support to residents and organizations throughout New Jersey.

The nonprofit runs a program dubbed the “City Planning Institute,” which gives students some hands-on experience with the intricacies of city planning and community development. In addition to Bloomfield, the program has been hosted in other New Jersey communities such as Newark, Paterson, Passaic, Trenton and the Highlands region.

In Bloomfield, the program was run in collaboration with the Township of Bloomfield Municipal Youth Guidance Council. As part of their research, current and former students surveyed more than 300 of their peers – ultimately coming up with a list of suggestions for town officials as they ponder the creation of a municipal master plan.
