Brick Cancels SummerFest Concerts For 2020

The cancellation is the result of ongoing crowd limitations amid the coronavirus pandemic, the mayor said.

BRICK, NJ — If you were hoping to see fireworks and a concert at Windward Beach Park this summer, there is some sad news: Brick Township has canceled its SummerFest concert series fot this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The township had canceled last week's concert and fireworks due to the limitations on public gatherings, but at the time was waiting to make a decision on the rest of the series, hoping that the limits would ease.

Mayor John G. Ducey on Wednesday confirmed the cancellation during his biweekly Facebook live session, saying the 500-person limit made it impossible to hold the event.

"We usually have 3,000 to 7,000 people at SummerFest," Ducey told residents who asked about the concerts. He said the 500-person limit would have forced town officials to turn people away, which he acknowledged would anger people.

Ducey also said it was likely SummerFest would have attracted considerably larger crowds this summer because so many other activities have been shut down, which would have exacerbated the problem.

On Tuesday, the Township Council approved a contract extension with the company that was to provide fireworks this year that will allow them to provide the fireworks in the summer of 2021.
