IN FOOTBALL: The Dragons opened the 2018 season the way they've opened the last five: with a victory over crosstown rival Brick Memorial.

But the Dragons (1-1) followed that victory with a 21-7 loss at the hands of St. John Vianney, which found ways to get past the defense that shut down Brick Memorial the week before. Senior quarterback Jimmy Leblo scored Brick's lone touchdown against the Lancers.

Brick hosts Freehold Borough on Friday night.

IN BOYS SOCCER: The Dragons are 2-3 so far. They opened with a 4-2 loss to Marlboro, responded with a 2-1 win over Shore and a 5-4 victory over Toms River East. The Dragons have lost two straight, to Toms River North, 4-0, and to Howell, 2-0.

John Christ scored two goals against Marlboro and had the gamewinner over Toms River East in overtime. Eli Alejandro had two goals against East and a goal against Shore.

Brick plays Lakewood (away, Monday).

IN FIELD HOCKEY: Brick is 2-2 so far, with wins over Toms River East (3-2) and Lacey (1-0), and losses to Shore Conference Class A South foes Toms River North (4-0) and Southern Regional (2-0).

The Dragons are scheduled to play Southern Regional on Wednesday (the game was moved due to Southern's back-to-school night on Thursday).

IN GIRLS TENNIS: The Dragons have had a tough season so far, going 0-5 as they opened the season against Brick Memorial, Donovan Catholic, Toms River South, Barnegat and Toms River North. The first doubles team of Gabriella Argento and Madison Hernandez won a set against Barnegat before losing in a tiebreaker.
