Brick Tops Brick Memorial In Annual Crosstown Football Clash [PHOTOS]

The Dragons win for the fourth straight year in a closely contested game.

BRICK, NJ — The annual meeting between Brick and Brick Memorial has turned into a duel for bragging rights in town, and Saturday, it was the Dragons who came away the winners.

Ja'Sir Taylor and Anthony Costanza each had a touchdown and Brick's defense had two as the Dragons fought for a 28-14 victory at Brick Memorial.

On a day so hot it was more suited to late July than early September, the teams battled back and forth the whole game. It wasn't until Jay Obernauer's 25-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:10 left that the Dragons sealed the victory.

Brick Memorial moved the ball well, and was on the verge of taking the lead on its opening possession when Dean Helstowski scooped up a fumble at Brick's 3 and ran it back for a touchdown.

The Mustangs responded to tie the game early in the second quarter with a 6-yard TD by Tony Thorpe. Costanza then marched the Dragons down the field and finished the drive with a 22-yard TD sprint to give Brick the lead at halftime.

Brick Memorial fought back and tied the game early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Grant McKelvey connected with a wide-open Jimmy Wrightington, who then sprinted 64 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-14.

Taylor answered with a sprint of his own, zipping through a hole and turning on the track speed all the way to the end zone to put Brick back in the lead 21-14, before Obernauer sealed the win.
