BASKING RIDGE, NJ — It's already started to snow in Basking Ridge, but forecasters expect much more to come Friday night into Saturday.

Basking Ridge could be in for a lot of snow, but predictions vary.

The National Weather Service placed Somerset County under a winter storm warning from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday. The agency expects accumulating snow to begin Friday evening, becoming heavy at times through Saturday morning and diminishing that afternoon.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the warning says.

Heavy snow is expected with total accumulations between 3 to 7 inches. Wind gusts as high as 35 to 40 mph are also anticipated.

But Basking Ridge may get less snow than much of New Jersey. The National Weather Service predicts 12-18 inches of snow along the Jersey Shore.

The Bernards Township Department of Public Works will be out treating and plowing the roads as needed.

Here are some reminders for residents:

  • Parking on the street during a snow emergency is prohibited. Vehicles parked on the street are subject to a summons and being towed.
  • Depositing or throwing snow onto the street is also prohibited; do not shovel, plow or otherwise place snow onto the roadway.
  • Please do not place garbage and/or recycling cans in the street. We realize this cleared area is an enticing location to place these cans, but it creates a hazard as they could get hit by vehicles or taken away by snowplows.
  • This is also the time to check generators and snowblowers for proper operation. Always keep generators away from windows and doors and never operate them in enclosed spaces.
  • Check in on your neighbors, especially the elderly or those that might need assistance. Don’t wait for your neighbor to need help to be a good friend.

Visit the Bernards Township website for more information.

If you lose power, contact your local power provider and not Police Communications unless an emergency exists (ie. power line causing a fire or blocking a roadway):
