WEST CALDWELL, NJ — A former crossing guard in West Caldwell is being mourned in the township after she died at the age of 87.

The West Caldwell Police Department recently announced the passing of Mary E. Olsen, formerly of West Caldwell. According to a message of mourning from the WCPD:

“Mrs. Olsen started as a crossing guard on Ravine Avenue near Harrison School when her son, Eric, was in first grade. Approximately five years later, the Harrison school closed, and she moved to the crossing post at Lane Avenue and Westville Avenue, where she served 30 more years. While serving in that capacity, she was designated the Sergeant Guard (head guard). She also served our agency as an on-call matron for when there were female arrestees. Mrs. Olsen retired from her position with our agency in June 2015.”

“Our deepest condolences to the Olsen family for their loss,” police added.
