Caldwell Library Board Member, Educator Dies At 91

Although he held master's degrees in computers and mathematics, he taught reading as well. He lived in Caldwell for 50 years.

CALDWELL, NJ — Although John F. Griffin held a master's degree in computer science and engineering and another in mathematics, he loved reading so much that he served on Caldwell's Library Board.

John F. Griffin, who lived in Caldwell for 50 years, passed away at age 91 on Aug. 7 "having lived a long and full life," his obituary says.

One of 11 children, Griffin was born in New York City in December 1930, his obituary says.

After graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School, he served in the Korean War as a lieutenant in the Cryptology Division of the U.S. Army.

He then received a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Fordham University, as well as a master's degrees in computer science and engineering and another in mathematics.

He married the late Anne R. Farrell in 1954 and they had seven children. Griffin taught at Trinity School in Manhattan led a computer technology initiative at RCA. He also worked as an analyst for commodities companies.

He was nominated for and awarded the prestigious Sloane Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After that, the family moved to Caldwell.

Griffin volunteered at high schools and colleges teaching both math and English. "John was a voracious reader, a curious intellectual, and a man of great faith and integrity," says his obit.

He is survived five of his children, several grandchildren, three brothers, and his caregiver Rosette
Martinez.

"We will miss and love you forever, Dad," wrote his kids.
