The West Essex Neighbor Brigade is offering a new opportunity to help local community members in need during a time of crisis.

If you, your family or someone you know is experiencing a temporary crisis due to an illness, surgery, cancer, accident, fire, death or other life event, West Essex Neighbor Brigade may be able to provide temporary, non-monetary assistance with some day-to-day needs.

Some of the services volunteers have provided in the past include meal delivery, dog walks, rides to doctors’ appointments, help with errands, friendly visits, and light household needs. Volunteers can sign up for activities based on their personal schedule, interest and availability.

“The West Essex Neighbor Brigade matches individuals seeking ways to give back to their communities with those in need of assistance,” said Carol DeFrance, chapter co-leader with Barbara Bruchac and Teresa Akersten. “Whether you are looking to help once a week or once a year, all you need is a computer or smartphone to be alerted when volunteer opportunities arise.”

When a West Caldwell resident was admitted into a rehabilitation facility to recover from a stroke, his wife, “Gloria S.,” turned to Neighbor Brigade. Volunteers took turns providing Gloria 120 rides to and from the nearby facility until her husband was able to return home.

“Words cannot express our thanks and appreciation that we have to all of those who volunteered to participate with Neighbor Brigade,” said Gloria. “Not only did they make a difficult situation very pleasant because of their willingness, but also for their interest and kindness daily. We are so grateful to be the recipients of these acts of giving.”

Neighbor Brigade, sponsored by First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell, is looking to expand its presence in West Essex among both volunteers and potential recipients.
