ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A “pawsome” animal rescue took place in Essex County on Thursday after two dogs fell through the ice of a local pond, authorities said.

According to the Essex Fells Police Department, officers responded to the golf course at the Essex Fells Country Club after getting a report that two dogs fell through the ice.

When officers arrived on the scene, they saw that one of the pooches had managed to climb out of the icy water. But the other dog wasn’t able to follow his companion, and was still submerged and desperately treading water.

With the help of staff members at the club, an officer, Scott Jones, ventured out on to the ice and was able to keep the “visibly exhausted” dog above water long enough to pull him to safety, authorities said.

“Sgt. Jones, along with Officer Kevin Brogan, the Essex Fells Fire Department and staff at the Essex Fells Country Club combined to save the life of this dog,” police said, calling it a “job well done.”
