They Are The Champions: Girls' Hockey And Boys' Football Teams In The Caldwells Honored

Two athletic teams in the Caldwells ranked statewide and in one case nationally.

THE CALDWELLS – The Essex County Board of County Commissioners honored the West Essex High School Girls Field Hockey Team and the James Caldwell High School Football Team last week for their athletic excellence and achievements during the 2022 season.

Commissioner At-Large Patricia Sebold of Livingston and Commissioner Leonard Luciano of District 4 co-sponsored and presented commendations to Head Coach Jill Cosse and the West Essex High School Girls' Field Hockey Team, and to Head Coach Todd Romano and the James Caldwell High School Football Team.

Commissioner Sebold congratulated the girls’ team for their tremendous 2022 season, winning the 2022 North Group 2 Sectional Championship and the 2022 Group 2 State Championship.

They also won the 2022 Super Essex Conference Championship, the 2022 Essex County Championship, and the 2022 Essex-Union Red Division Conference Championship. The team finished at number 2 in the state and 8 in the country.

The West Essex High School Girls' Field Hockey Team was further recognized for the accomplishments of individual members. Evangeline Minnella, Sophia Sisco and Abby Zanelli were named to the All-Group 1 st team. Gianna Macrino was named All-Group 2nd team, and Adelaide Minnella and Cielle McInerney were named to the All-Group 3rd team.

Commissioners Sebold and Luciano also honored Head Coach Todd Romano and the James Caldwell High School Football Team for their performance throughout the 2022 season.

Commissioner Luciano commended them for winning the first overall NJSIAA Group 2 New Jersey
State Football Championship in history. Their 28-game, longest active statewide winning streak clinched the first 13-0 season in school history and assured the first outright Group 2 state champions in New Jersey history.

Luciano lauded the team for its incredible season with an accumulation of achievements:

  • First Ever Group 2 State Champions
  • North 2 Group 2 State Champions
  • North 2 Regional State Champions
  • Super Football Conference – American Gold Division Champions
  • Active 28-Game winning streak (longest active streak in New Jersey and 8 th longest in
    the country
  • Final Team Rankings include: #8 Ranked Team in the State of New
  • #1 Ranked Team in Essex County
  • #1 Group 2 Team in the State of New Jersey

Commissioners Sebold and Luciano were joined at the podium by the coaches and their teams
presenting them with framed Commendations and replicas for each team member and posing for
official photos. Members of both teams shared comments at the microphone.

The Essex County Board of County Commissioners was pleased to spotlight these exemplary outcomes of teamwork among teammates, coaches, families, school communities and volunteers who coordinated many layers and moving parts for a successful program. It pledged its support to the athletes throughout the high school years and into their future endeavors.
