Mount St. Dominic Tennis Senior Rebecca Hess Swings Into Oct. Strong

Sophomore Lena Tusche Scores the Golden Goal

As the first month of school comes to a close, Mount Soccer and Tennis are having a banner year. Mount Senior Rebecca Hess has stayed red hot on the tennis court. Rebecca is currently undefeated (8-0) as the 1st Singles for the Mount St. Dominic Tennis team; with recent impressive wins over Newark Academy and Millburn’s aces. She has advanced into the Finals of the Essex County Singles Tournament, where she will face MKA’s ace, with her eyes set on the “Best Girls Tennis Player in the County.” Likewise, Mount’s Lena Tusche ‘26 is having an impressive run. She scored the golden goal on Sept. 27th, to push the Lions to victory over Cedar Grove, 3-2, propelling the team to 6-0, for the season.

While Varsity Tennis (5-3) lost to Livingston, 1-4, on Sept. 27th, the team had a wild ride the week before. They defeated Glen Ridge in the 1st Round of the Essex County Tournament, 4-1, on Sept. 19, but then fell in the quarter final round to Newark Academy, 1-4. On Sept. 20, the Lions lost to Millburn, 1-4. They came back strong on Sept, 22 to sweep Irvington High School, 0-5, with all, 6-0, matches.

They next face Columbia High School on Oct. 2, home vs Newark Academy on Oct. 3, and at Jonathan Dayton High School on Oct. 4.

Here is how the other Mount teams fared over the last two weeks:

Soccer (7-0)

In an exciting Mount Varsity Soccer match on Wednesday, Sept. 27th, with only seconds to go in double OT, Lena Tusche ‘26 scored the game-winning golden goal to push the Lions to victory over Cedar Grove, 3-2, propelling the team to an undefeated, 6-0, for the season. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Gianna Camporeale ‘26 of Caldwell scored the, 2-2, game tying goal, which eventually went into overtime. Eliza Haghighi ‘24 scored once earlier in the game to tie the score, 1-1. Goalie Frankie Mansfield ‘24 made 4 saves in the win, and Tusche ‘26 and Mary Hladik ‘25 each had an assist.

Mount Soccer finished the week before well too. Varsity Soccer went on to defeat Caldwell High School, 6-0, on Sept. 29th, adding another notch to Mount Soccer’s undefeated record now at, 7-0, for the season. Caitlin Caufield ‘24 scored 2 goals, Erin Murphy ‘24, Reina Casas ‘27, Gianna Camporeale ‘26, and Eliza Haghighi ‘24 scored 1 goal apiece. Goalies Frankie Mansfield ‘24 and Lorelei Middleton ‘25 shared duties as they combined for the shutout win.

On Sept. 19, Gianna Camporeale ‘26 notched her 8th goal of the year when she scored the game winner in overtime vs Newark Academy, where Mount came out on top, 1-0. Goalie Frankie Mansfield ‘24 notched her 4th shutout of the year with one save in this contest. Varsity Soccer then went on to defeat Columbia High School, 2-1, on Sept. 21, where Lena Tusche ‘26 scored 2 goals, and Gianna Comporeale ‘26 added 2 assists.

They next play home vs Verona on Oct. 2, home vs West Essex High School on Oct. 4, and at Millburn on Oct. 6.

Volleyball (5-8)

After a tough fought game, Varsity Volleyball lost to #9 ranked Livingston, 0-2, on Sept. 26th. The team then had another upset against MKA, losing 0-2, on Sept. 28th, and to Newark Academy, 0-2, on Sept. 28th. The Lions made a comeback beating Caldwell, 2-1, but then lost to both West Essex and Verona, 0-2, on Sept. 30th in the Caldwell Quad.

However, the week before, Varsity Volleyball fared well, with Izzy Rivera '24 achieving a big milestone in High School Volleyball with – her 1,000th career assist. She did this in a 2-0 victory over Caldwell High School on Sept. 19. The Lions then lost to Verona, 0-2, on Sept. 21. At the Livingston High School Invitational on Sept. 23, the team finished 5th out of 16 teams, but then lost in the playoff round of 8.

They next play at Millburn on Oct. 2nd, at James Caldwell on Oct. 4, and home vs Verona on Oct. 6, for Dig Pink.

Field Hockey (2-5-2)

On Monday, Sept. 25th, Mount Field Hockey tied St. Elizabeth's, 1-1, with Elizabeth Forsatz ‘24 scoring one goal. The team then lost, 0-1, to Westwood, on Sept. 28th, and to Livingston, 1-7, on Sept. 29th.

The Lions also took a few hits during the week of Sept. 18th. They lost to Cranford, 1-0, on Sept. 18; and then lost to Gov Livingston, 0-5, on Sept. 20. However, in a well-played game, they tied Columbia, 0-0, on Sept. 21. They followed that up with another tie vs St. Elizabeth, 1-1, with a goal by Elizabeth Forsatz ‘24.

They next play at Verona on Oct. 2nd and home vs James Caldwell on Oct. 5.

Cross Country

On September 27th, Varsity Cross-Country defeated Columbia, and lost to Livingston. Isabella Dressler '25 was the top Mount finisher in 4th place. The team did nicely last week. At the Sept. 19th meet, Lily Nachbaur '25 placed 2nd, and Cassidy Sontz '24 placed 10th overall. The team then competed at the Sept. 21st Osprey Invitational at Stockton University where Lily Nachbaur ‘25 was the top Mount finisher, taking 42nd place out of 170 runners. She now has the 5th fastest time in the conference this season. In addition, Isabella Dressler ‘25 now has the 9th fastest time in the conference.

Next, Cross Country has a SEC Dual Meet meet on Oct. 3, against Bloomfield and Nutley High Schools at Branch Brook Park, and will race in the Greystone Invitational on Oct. 6.
