NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — Videos from two police departments in Essex County show a stolen car tumbling off an embankment and falling more than two stories into the driveway.

The car plummeted more than 20 feet near Hilltop Drive and White Rock Road about 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, New Year's Day, North Caldwell police said.

The chain of events began shortly after midnight when North Caldwell police checked out a report of a stolen vehicle on Hilltop Drive and saw two people drive away in it, officials said.

That's when the driver struck two parked cars, lost control, and drove over an embankment, falling 21.3 feet, police said.

The stolen vehicle landed on another car as a bystander scooted away, the video shows.

"Occupants of the suspect vehicle were able to escape and fled on foot," police said. "Detective Herbert, Officer Moskalow, and surrounding agencies took two suspects into custody and had them transported to trauma centers for medical evaluation."

Both suspects were treated and released into police custody, police said.

A girl who was standing near the crash site was was enough to escape injury, police told ABC News.

The Verona police posted a separate video showing the car disappearing over the embankment, and people screaming below.

North Caldwell Captain/OIC Strodthoff and sergeants Credico, O’Neill, and DePoe responded to the scene to assist and conduct an accident investigation, police said.

"North Caldwell Police would like to thank Verona Police, Fairfield Police, Cedar Grove Police, Essex Fells Police, and Livingston Police for their assistance in this incident," the North Bergen police said.

The suspects' names and charges have not yet been released, but Patch will update the story when more information is received.
