THE CALDWELLS — A West Caldwell resident was arrested in Upstate New York for aggravated DWI over the weekend, New York State Troopers said.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, troopers arrested Kanandi S. Deshmukh, 42, of West Caldwell, on a charge of aggravated DWI, and issued multiple vehicle and traffic tickets, the police said in a release.

Someone with a Blood Alcohol Content level of .18 or higher can be charged with aggravated DWI in New York State.

Police said that around 7:22 p.m., Troopers responded to State Route 9 in the town of Ausable for property damage accident. Troopers saw a 2010 brown Honda CRV in a yard. It had struck a utility pole, causing it to be knocked down and lines across the roadway, police said.

An investigation determined that the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the pole, a release said.

"While the Troopers interviewed her a smell of an alcoholic beverage was detected," police said.

At the Plattsburgh Police Department, the driver recorded a .19 percent BAC, police said. She was issued tickets for aggravated DWI, DWI-first offense, operating a motor vehicle with a BAC 08 percent or 1 percent, motor vehicle registration suspended, imprudent speed, moved from lane unsafely, and failure to keep right.

The driver has a court date in Ausable in February, police said.
