Chatham Fencers Earn Bronze At American Challenge

The squad also earned two top eights in the fencing tournament.

CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham was well represented in the American Challenge fencing tournament held the first weekend October at Drew University earning bronze medals and a pair of top eights, according to Coach Jerry Duffey.

The tournament was held at Drew University saw 955 fencers competing in events with an average field size of 60 competitors. Sophomore Kat Xikes earned a bronze medal in the Division 2 Women's Sabre event on Saturday. Junior Kailing Sathyanath finished 8th in Division 1A Women's Sabre on Sunday. Junior Preston Yen finished 8th in Division 2 Men's Sabre on Sunday.

Half of the Chatham High School Fencing Team's 40 members competed in the weekend long event as they continue their preparations for the program's 10th varsity season. Last year both the girls' and boys' teams won the NJAC conference championship, finished 16th and 8th respectively in the State Team Championship brackets, and earned their first State Squad podium medals with Women's Sabre Squad bronze and Men's Sabre Squad silver.

The team will hold their preseason information meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Chatham High School. Experience is not required. The team is also looking for students to participate as videographers or armorer. Questions should be directed to [email protected].
