CHATHAM, NJ — A local restaurant on Main Street was just named among the best Indian restaurants in New Jersey.

The website Best of NJ put together a list of the best Indian restaurants in New Jersey, and Chatham's Sonny's Indian Kitchen ranked as one of the top North Jersey spots.

Sonny's Indian Kitchen, which is located at 225 Main Street in Chatham, opened up in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, by owner and chef Sonny Kumar.

Before operating his own restaurant, Kumar cooked and managed for five years at Begum Palace, an Indian restaurant in Madison. The Central India native ended up leaving and announced on Facebook that he'd open a place for home-style, authentic Indian food.

"Meeting Owner Sonny is just as much of a reason to visit here as his high-quality, authentic dishes. First opening during the height of Covid, Sonny personally delivered orders daily. His dedication has since shifted to his restaurant, where he continues to please with his infectious hospitality," Best of NJ wrote.

Menu staples include Sonny’s Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Kaju Paneer, and their various selections of Naan.

"There are some Indian restaurants that are absolutely incredible, and they are passionate about serving amazing food," Kumar previously told Patch. "But most of the Indian restaurants, it’s all copy-paste formula. They follow the same pattern of everything."

Currently, Sonny's Indian Kitchen provides dine-in and take-out options and is open from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
