CHATHAM, NJ — Those looking to get out for a family-friendly and dog-friendly, fresh air event, can do so on New Year’s Day.

For $10 per person to benefit BSA local outdoor stewardship projects, with a special commemorative pin for each participant, walkers can join in on the 2.5 mile walk whenever it works best for them, on Saturday, Jan. 1 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

This is the third annual walk for BSA Troop 280, which is a Chatham-based troop of 40 registered girls from towns throughout the area, including Berkeley Heights, Gillette, Madison, Morristown, New Providence and Summit.

The 2021 First Day Walk helped to fundraise for materials for a recent Eagle Scout Project. Lucine Basralian designed and led a team of fellow scouts to build a boardwalk that bridged a path on the dog walking trail for rescue dogs from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, to enjoy rehabilitating walks.

The funds raised may also help BSA 280 to plant native trees on public lands and purchase trail markers, among open space projects.

It begins and ends at the Loantaka Brook Reservation entrance in the Loantaka Way parking lot, which on Google Maps is located at “195-215 Loantaka Way, Madison.”
