Former Chatham Councilwoman, Morris County Freeholder Passes Away

Leanna Brown had a long career in public service. She was 81.

CHATHAM, NJ— Former Chatham Councilwoman, Morris County Freeholder, and State Senator Leanna Brown passed away this week. She was 81 years old.

Brown had a long and dedicated career in public service. In addition to her multiple elected positions, Brown served on the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, worked on President George W. Bush's transition team, and was on the President's Commission on White House Fellowships during Bush's presidency.

Her election to the State Senate made history: Brown was the first woman to be elected as a Republican to the position in 1983.

"Leanna always showed a passion for the needs of county and state residents, working tirelessly on their behalf. She was a great backer of womens’ causes, and was a great friend and mentor to many women who sought to join the political and electoral process," the current Board of Chosen Freeholders said in a statement. "She was the driving force behind the county’s creation of the Morris County Advisory Committee on Women."

Brown is predeceased by her husband, Stan, and is survived by two sons, four grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
