CHATHAM, NJ — Chatham will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with an opportunity for residents to volunteer their time and participate in a local food donation drive.

Food insecurity was thought to be one of the most serious community issues that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. faced during his lifetime.

With rising grocery prices and inflation putting a strain on members of the community, Chatham, too, has faced this challenge, with the Chatham United Methodist Church's Community Food Distribution and pantry helping to feed many needy residents.

This year, Chatham Borough is inviting all residents to help their neighbors by using the drive-thru food drop-off at Chatham United Methodist Church on 460 Main Street's rear parking lot on Monday, Jan. 16 between 10 a.m. and noon.

"Donating non-perishable items that are high in fiber, low sugar and low sodium not only feed hungry people but also contribute to their overall health and wellness," officials said.

The CUMC Community Food Pantry opened in mid-March 2020 at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic with two plastic shelves outside their sanctuary doors. According to officials, the communities of both Chatham and Madison have embraced and supported the efforts and helped keep shelves stocked.

"As our neighbor's need increase, our response has grown. Our 'Pop Up Pantry' has been replaced with two weather sturdy sheds and remains accessible 24 hours a day-7 days a week," the organization said.
