Car Strikes Mother, Child Crossing Chatham's Main Street: Police

The driver received several summonses, and the mother and child were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

CHATHAM, NJ — A driver struck a mother and child crossing at Main Street on Tuesday morning, according to police. The driver received summonses for careless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. Tuesday at Main Street and Coleman Avenue, police said. The mother — a 41-year-old from Chatham — and her 4-year-old child crossed the street within the crosswalk, according to police.

The Chatham Emergency Squad took the mother and child to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver — from Gaithersburg, Maryland — remained on the scene.

Chatham Borough police didn't publicly identify anyone involved.

Members of the borough's traffic unit and detective bureau and the Morris County Sheriff's Criminal Investigative Section examined the scene.

Officials closed the Main Street between Coleman and Washington Avenues for about two hours for the investigation.
