Road Closed In Chatham Due To PSE&G Gas Work

CHATHAM, NJ — Watchung Avenue will be closed down to motorists due to ongoing construction for PSE&G’s gas main replacement project.

According to an alert from the Chatham Borough Police Department, Watchung Avenue will shut down between Fairmount Avenue and Hillside Avenue on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

A detour is currently in place and motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes if possible.

The construction work, which began last summer, involves replacing aging cast iron gas pipes with new, durable plastic and/or coated steel piping, ensuring the gas systems' continued safety and reliability for the foreseeable future.

The gas main replacement and services portion of the project is expected to last until the winter of 2024.
