The police department explained that the buttons should be pushed first by pedestrians before entering crosswalks. If there are drivers coming, walkers should make eye contact with drivers and ensure that it’s safe to begin walking, before they actually start walking into the crosswalk,, the police department wrote.

A couple of the intersections pictured, additionally had stand-up signs in the streets, to alert drivers of the crosswalks ahead of them.

“Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility,” the Chatham Borough Police Department wrote. “Pedestrians and motorists must both do their part to keep pedestrians safe.”
