'Heavy Delays' Anticipated As Water Main Work Begins On Shunpike Road In Chatham

CHATHAM, NJ — Be prepared for delays and detours along a section of Shunpike Road in Chatham for several months, as New Jersey American Water begins installing new water mains.

Morris County officials shared information about the project on Monday, when work was scheduled to start. A detour will be in place, as Shunpike Road will be closed from the intersection with Loantaka Way to Southern Boulevard (CR 647). The project is expected to take about three months, with working hours between 8:30 and 4:30 p.m.

"Heavy delays are anticipated, so plan accordingly," officials said.

Detour for Loantaka Way traffic:

  • Northbound traffic on Loantaka Way will be diverted to make a right onto Woodland Road. Traffic will be directed to turn right onto Green Village Road, leading to Shunpike Road.
  • Southbound traffic on Loantaka Way will be detoured to make a left onto Spring Valley Road. Traffic will then continue onto Green Village Road, leading to Shunpike Road.

Detour for westbound Shunpike Road traffic:

  • Westbound traffic on Shunpike will make a left onto Green Village Road. Traffic will then continue onto Spring Valley Road. Vehicles will then be directed to make a right turn onto Loantaka Way, leading to Shunpike Road.
