Services Set For Medford Lakes Man Killed In Army Exercise

Services have been set for a South Jersey man who was killed in a military exercise in Alaska on March 30.

A wake will be held for Spc. Nicholas Peter DiMona III, of Medford Lakes, on Monday, April 15, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Medford, according to the church’s website. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 a.m.

"It is a privilege for St. Mary of the Lakes to host the Funeral for Specialist Nicholas DiMona III of Medford Lakes," the church said on its website. " ... Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him."

DiMona received a flag escort from Philadelphia to Marlton on Wednesday.

DiMona was assigned to the Army's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, and was training with his unit at Donnelly Training Area near Fort Greely when he was shot, on Saturday, March 30, according to U.S. Army Alaska officials.

He was treated on the scene, then airlifted and taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, officials said. The incident remains under investigation.

DiMona joined the army in July 2017 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia before being transferred to Alaska last year, officials said. His awards included the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and the parachutist badge.

DiMona graduated from Shawnee High School, according to the Courier Post. He was a lifeguard at YMCA of the Pines camps in Medford.

About 500 people attended a memorial that was held at Shawnee in his honor on Sunday, according to the Courier Post. His family and his girlfriend spoke at the memorial, which was attended by family friends, former classmates, neighbors, scouts, veterans and members of military support groups.
