House To Be Demolished And Land Added To Cranford Park

Demolition began on Wednesday of an abandoned house at 112 Park Drive in Cranford that protrudes into Nomahegan Park.

CRANFORD, NJ — Demolition began on Wednesday of an abandoned house located at 112 Park Drive in Cranford that protrudes into Nomahegan Park. The house and its accompanying section of street will be removed and will be become part of the park.

The county first moved to acquire the house for $495,000 back in 2010, but the final steps were not taken until November of 2019.

"This small but significant parcel will improve a popular walking trail and add more than a half-acre to the natural habitat in the park, while removing a neighborhood eyesore," said Freeholder Chair Bette Jane Kowalski.

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders closed on the “elbow” of land and a street in November 2019, said Jim Lowney of the Office of Public Information in Union County. The .59-acre parcel was purchased through the Union County Open Space, Recreation and Historic Preservation Trust Fund.
