MONTCLAIR, NJ — Imani Oakley, a progressive Democratic challenger for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, released the following statement today, in addition to a copy of her Working Families Party Endorsement Questionnaire:

Transparency and openness are bedrocks of progressive politics. The days of smoke-filled back rooms where good ol’ boys make decisions should be long behind us, because when you represent the people, rather than corporations, it’s important to be accountable to the people.
Because of my history with Working Families New Jersey, I believe that it is my responsibility to be fully transparent about my application for their endorsement, regardless of who they choose to endorse. As is standard for endorsements from progressive organizations, WFP offers a comprehensive questionnaire that candidates are asked to fill out in order to be considered. I have published mine in full, with a few details (like my personal cell phone number) redacted, but all other answers complete, as they were sent to WFP. I am releasing this copy in advance of my live endorsement interview tonight (Friday, April 29).
In the spirit of transparency, I encourage my opponent, Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr., to release his questionnaire as well. Allowing our voters to see some of this process will help them make the best, most informed decision and gain some fresh perspective on the workings of political endorsements!

A progressive coalition is growing around Oakley's campaign, including Friends of the Earth Action, the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, Brand New Congress, 4 Northern New Jersey Sunrise Movement Hubs, Elect Black Women PAC, Black Lives Matter PAC, Americans for Justice in Palestine PAC, American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee, Harvard College Dems, Catch Fire, Roadmap for Progress, Building Bridges for America, Future Generations PAC, Peace Action, and many more.

Imani Oakley is a long-time political organizer and pro-democracy activist running for Congress in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District. The seat covers parts of Essex, Union, and Hudson counties. Her time working in New Jersey political spaces has made one thing clear: our state suffers from rabid corruption. Her campaign is dedicated to ending this system and lifting up working-class communities. Look for her in Ballot Siberia (the area of your New Jersey ballot where primary challengers are found) in the New Jersey primary election on June 7.
