EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — An East Brunswick resident is a participant in NBC’s new Regency-era-themed dating show, “The Courtship.”

The show, which premiered on Sunday, is described as a cross between “Bridgerton” and “The Bachelorette” and stars resident Danny Kim.

The premise is simple — 16 male suitors will compete for the affection of Nicole Rémy, a software engineer from Seattle. The show is set in Castle Howard in England and participants are dressed in Regency-inspired finery.

Kim and the other contestants have to win over Rémy and her parents, sister, and best friend.

“I grew up believing in romance and love. It’s something that I always cherished and wanted to marry my first love. Then reality set in and I got my heart broken,” Kim told Patch.

“It was a long journey but I finally built my trust in love and relationships again and the show gave me an opportunity to go back to my roots and foundation when it comes to dating.”

And so, he was willing to be transported to another era, in his pursuit of love.

Kim is a retired Air Force Officer who is currently a motivational speaker and lifestyle coach. He said leaving the military was difficult at first, because it gave him “stability and routine.”

"However, I knew I wanted to serve people in different ways after I served in the military,” Kim said. “I wanted to serve people in building their confidence because I have personal experience in it. It was hard to leave but easy to commit to my passion and dream.”

Kim said he was inspired by the movie “Hitch” and threw himself into starting his own business as a confidence coach.

He credits East Brunswick for making him who he is. “From East Brunswick Bears to playing basketball at Country Lane, East Brunswick is where my childhood is. I am who I am because of my experience in the Township,” Kim said.

The show airs at 8 p.m. Sundays on NBC and is available on the Peacock app. At the end of Sunday's episode, Rémy chose six of the suitors for a final dance and sent three of them home. Kim remains on the show for at least another week. NBC has not said how many episodes are included in the season.

“The audience should expect the real me throughout the show,” said Kim. “They will see a man who worked on himself to become the best version of himself so he can fall in love and live the best life with the woman he falls for.”
