Funeral For Saddle Brook Firefighter Shawn Sturdy Is Saturday

Sturdy, 23, a lieutenant with the Saddle Brook Fire Department, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident.

SADDLE BROOK, NJ — Services are this weekend for a borough firefighter who died Sunday from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle accident.

Visitation with Shawn Anthony Sturdy's family is Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kugler Community Home For Funerals, 311 5th St., in Saddle Brook. A funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Paterson.

Sturdy, 23, was in an ATV crash June 8 and fought for nine days before succumbing to his injuries, authorities said. He was lieutenant with Saddle Brook Volunteer Fire Department Engine Co. No. 1.

"I watched him grow up to be an unbelievable man," Fire Chief Christopher Sloma previously said. "To this day, I haven't met a happier, more respectful man in my life."

More than $15,400 was donated online to help Sturdy's family pay for his medical bills.

Sturdy was a bridge and tunnel agent for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

He is survived by his parents Vincent and Lisa Sturdy, brother Vincent, grandfather Rocco DiStefano, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and co-workers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 332 Wheeler Avenue, Scranton, Pennsylvania 18510.
