FAIR LAWN, NJ — An intoxicated driver sped away when an officer went to pull over the vehicle, prompting a chase that ended in a crash into a traffic light pole, Fair Lawn police Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

The driver, Alvin Mandry, of New York, made a U-turn onto Paramus Road and "took off at a high rate of speed," after the officer tried to stop the vehicle just after midnight Saturday. The officer then pursued the Mercedes until it crashed on Paramus at Century Road.

Mandry, 32, had to be forcibly removed from the vehicle; a passenger also had to be removed. Mandry was taken to an area hospital after a complaint of pain unrelated to this incident.
