FAIR LAWN, NJ — Demolition and rebuilding of the Fair Lawn Nabisco site will likely begin next year, Mayor Kurt Peluso said in a Facebook Live Q&A.

About 600 employees lost their jobs when the factory, which opened in 1958, closed down last year.

Mondelēz International, the owner of Nabisco, is renting the building from its contractual new owner right now, Peluso said. Thus, the historic facility will not be vacant while plans are finalized, though baking operations have stopped.

"It'll be fully operational until it's time to come down, and then fully operational when it's back up and running," Peluso said.

As first reported by NorthJersey.com, Greek Development of New Brunswick bought the property for $146.5 million last fall.

Next year, the new owner plans to remove parts of the building and get a new structure up, Peluso said.

A business is under contract to potentially use the building for warehouse and distribution, Peluso said, adding the details are still in the works.

"We've met with the possible purchaser and they're looking to give back to the town to be a strong part of the community, so we're excited about that."
