The project hampered commuters with weeks-long closures, but the addition of new lanes is expected to reduce congestion.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Berlin-Cross Keys Road, which has been closed for several weeks during the finishing touches of major roadwork, will reopen soon, officials said.

The road is expected to open late Friday afternoon, according to the Camden County government, which administered the $6.9 million project to widen the well-traveled thoroughfare.

The project is now complete, widening a 1.25-mile stretch Cross Keys Road to two lanes in either direction with a center turning lane, officials said. The impacted portion of the roadway was fully closed for several weeks-long periods — the road has been closed since mid-June for the project's finals stages.

But the widened roadway will bring longterm benefits, says County Commissioner Al Dyer.

"We know that this project was a major disruption for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists traveling through the area, but it was a worthwhile investment," Dyer said in a news release. "The goal of widening this road was to increase safety and efficiency for travelers and I believe we have accomplished that."

The widening encompassed the roadway between Camden County Technical School's Gloucester Township campus (343 Berlin-Cross Keys Rd, Sicklerville) and Turnersville Road (Route 688). That includes portions of the roadway in Pine Hill, Gloucester Township and Winslow Township.
