CAPE MAY, NJ — A Blackwood man involved in a hit-and-run against a pedestrian was caught after trying to evade police at the Jersey Shore, authorities said.

At about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, a Cape May police officer noticed a vehicle with extensive damage to the windshield and toward the rear traveling around Lafayette Street and Sydney Avenue. The officer tried to pull over the vehicle. But the driver, Brandon L. Rollans, refused to stop, police said.

Rollans, 25, eventually abandoned the vehicle at Beach Avenue and Ocean Street — by the Cape May Promenade along the beach — authorities said. Police found him and arrested him.

Further investigation revealed that before Rollans reached Cape May, he was "involved in" a collision with a pedestrian and fled the scene, police said. It's unclear where or when the alleged incident occurred. Patch contacted police but didn't immediately receive a response.

Rollans was charged with second-degree eluding (two counts), third-degree hindering apprehension (two counts), third-degree resisting arrest by force, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, fourth-degree resisting arrest by flight, and unspecified motor-vehicle offenses. He was placed in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
