Gloucester Twp. Concert Canceled Due To High Heat, Chance Of Thunderstorms

The township is dealing with 'dangerous' heat and the chance of storms that could produce heavy rainfall, according to forecasters.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The weather has not been cooperating with Gloucester Township's outdoor events lately.

Monday night's Sounds of Summer concert has been canceled because of excessive heat, humidity and possible thunderstorms, the township announced. The show, featuring Bar None Band, has no rain date.

The Sounds of Summer Concert Series brings concerts every Monday evening to Veterans Park. July 8's show, featuring Buddy Gale Big Band, was canceled because of extreme heat.

Concerts are set to resume July 22 and run through Aug. 5. See the schedule.

Meanwhile, last Friday's outdoor movie at Veterans Park was postponed because of rain.

Heat index values could reach 103 on Monday in Gloucester Township, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday, when the heat index could reach 108, producing "dangerously hot" conditions in the region, according to the NWS.

Here's the NWS's latest forecast for Gloucester Township:

  • Monday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 103. West wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Monday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Partly cloudy, with a low around 76. Southwest wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Tuesday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 99. Heat index values as high as 107. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
  • Tuesday night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 79. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
  • Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 95. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
