Drunk Cop Sentenced For Double Fatal Crash Charges In Somerset County

SOMERSET, NJ — An Edison Police Officer, who was off-duty at the time, was sentenced for driving drunk during a car crash in Somerset where two of his passengers died in August 2023.

Judge Jonathan W. Romankow on Wednesday sentenced Amitoj Oberoi, 30, of Somerset, to two concurrent terms of 15 years in State prison on two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide. The No Early Release Act requires Oberoi to serve 85 percent of the sentence without eligibility for parole.

Oberoi was also sentenced to a motor vehicle offense of driving while intoxicated.

The charges stem from a motor vehicle crash on Aug. 27, 2023 on Route 27 in Franklin Township.

Oberoi, who was employed as an Edison Police Officer and off-duty at the time of the crash, was driving the 2007 Audi Q7 at the time of the crash, reported at approximately 6:20 a.m.

The crash resulted in the deaths of Carlos Perez-Gaytan, 24, of Somerset, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, 20, of North Brunswick. The two were passengers in Oberoi's Audi.

Oberoi was speeding in the Audi Q7 while going southbound on Somerset Street when he lost control of the car, causing it to leave the road and hit several trees, lamp posts, and a utility pole, according to authorities.
