HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough plans to buy out two properties so warehouse developers cannot build their proposed projects there, town officials said in a news release Tuesday.

Deputy Mayor Bob Britting and Committeeman Jim Ruh said the township is "finalizing negotiations" to acquire an 11.29-acre property on Amwell Road and 17.42-acre property on Millstone River Road, where warehouse applications are currently pending. These two are among a number of large-scale warehouses proposed in the township, which local citizens have protested at points as the applications move slowly through the planning process.

Now, officials said they intend to add these two properties to the township's open space, and the discussion to purchase them comes "as part of a broader initiative to balance industrial development with environmental preservation."

Acquiring this land would bringing the total acreage protected from development to 13,241.90, or 37.83 percent of acreage within the Township of Hillsborough, officials said.

Britting and Ruh both expressed that commitment to preserving open space in statements Tuesday.

"I am committed to preserving our beautiful land for future generations," Britting said. "We will continue to do all that we can to expand our open space, ensuring that the natural beauty of our community remains intact and accessible to all."

“The acquisition of these properties eliminates the possibility of warehouses being built in those locations and will not only bolster the Township's commitment to environmental sustainability but also provide additional space for community activities, parks, and green areas,” stated Ruh. “By repurposing these properties, Hillsborough aims to create accessible, vibrant, and sustainable spaces that benefit current and future generations.”

An ordinance will be introduced at the Township Council meeting on Oct. 24 to authorize the purchase of these properties; officials did not mention the possible cost.
