Route 206 Construction Resumes In Hillsborough

Mayor Robert Britting Jr. shared a list of items he wants the NJ Department of Transportation to prioritize when resuming work.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Construction work has resumed on the stalled Route 206 widening project in Hillsborough.

During the Township Committee meeting on Tuesday, Deputy Mayor John Ciccarelli said crews were out on Route 206 on Monday doing surveying work.

"We were promised regular progress updates from the [New Jersey Department of Transportation] and we will be sharing them when we receive them," said Ciccarelli.

Mayor Robert Britting Jr. also shared on Wednesday a list of items that the Township believes should be on the NJDOT's priority list when resuming work.

Britting asked the NJDOT to prioritize the following items "immediately:"

  • Replace the missing sidewalk on Falcon Road
  • Replace missing sidewalk on Route 206 between Triangle Road and Independence Drive
  • Cut "incredibly high grass and weeds" along the construction area as it impedes visibility for drivers or pedestrians
  • Remedy the situation where construction barriers are restricting the visibility of some intersections
  • Install temporary patching and trench settlements on Route 206 along the construction area
  • Correct uneven pavement on Route 206 South near the Exxon gas station, north of Triangle Road, and near bypass
  • Install temporary pavement on all driveways of businesses and homes along Route 206
  • Repair all potholes within the construction zone
  • Complete restoration of the frontage area in front of the Brook Haven Loft Apartments
  • Complete lawn restoration at 377 Triangle Road
  • Cut the weeds at Falcon Road intersection

"In general we want them to keep this area updated as they are working on it so we can all drive there in a safe way," said Britting.

The $41 million federally-funded project to widen Route 206 has been halted since May 2023 after the NJDOT terminated its contract with Konkus Corporation.

Roman Asphalt was chosen as the new contractor for NJDOT.
