Obituary: Elizabeth Filan, 85, of Middletown: Born in Ireland; Former Long-Time Employee at Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel

Elizabeth (Betty) Filan was born and raised in Ireland before settling in Middletown for 48 years.

Elizabeth (Betty) Filan, 85, of Middletown, NJ, died on October 1, 2014 at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, NJ. She was born in New York, NY and she was raised in Ennistymon, County Clare, Ireland. Betty and her husband, Peter lived in the Bronx, NY before moving to Middletown 48 years ago. Elizabeth devoted most of her life to raising her family and she also worked at Bayshore Community Hospital in Central Services for 13 years before retiring in 1989. Betty’s favorite holiday was St. Patrick’s Day, when she loved cooking corned beef and baking Irish soda bread for her family and friends. Betty adored spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she would always say that the days she spent with them were the best days of her life.

Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Peter Filan; her two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Darlene Filan of Port Murray, NJ and Michael and Vicki Filan of Charleston, SC; her three daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and James Aravecz of Lincroft, NJ, Anne and Tim Donnelly of Middletown, NJ, and Jacqueline and James Kaye of St. Augustine, FL; her grandchildren, Chris and his wife Jillian, Erin and her husband James, Eamon and his wife Lindsey, Sean, Nancy, Gregg, and Kerry; her step- grandchildren, David and Jonathan; her great-grandchildren, Clark and Mary Alice; and her step-great-grandchild, Michael.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Murphy.
