HAZLET, NJ — Hazlet is reminding residents that it is the homeowner's or tenant's responsibility to clear sidewalks on their property.

The department posted the ordinance (372-1) to clarify the sidewalk clearing:

"Duty to remove. Any owner or tenant of lands or premises abutting or bordering on any public street in the Township shall remove all snow and ice from the abutting sidewalks of such streets or, in the case of ice which may be so frozen as to make removal impracticable, cause the same to be thoroughly covered with sand or ashes, within 12 hours of daylight after the same shall fall or be formed thereon."

So sidewalk shoveling is a must and sprinkle some sand or safety ice melt on icy patches.

The National Weather Service forecast for Wednesday is sunny, with a high near 36. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Wednesday night is mostly clear, with a low around 21. West wind 5 to 10 mph.

Tuesday's snow was heavy and wet, so if you have any accumulated don't over-exert yourself, police said.

The department said shoveling does raise the heart rate and blood pressure. Pause every now and then to prevent exhaustion. Take time to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Sudden exertion can be hard on those who have a history of or who may be at high risk of heart problems, so see this link from the Mayo Clinic on safe shoveling.
