HOLMDEL, NJ — Music and art will intersect at the opening of the Bell Works Winter Art Exhibition “Groove.”

The opening is Saturday, Dec. 17, beginning with a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will happen at the Art Space on The Block at Bell Works, 101 Crawfords Corner Road.

“Groove” features the artwork of Haley Potter, a local artist, who "deconstructs the energy of sound and rebuilds it as vibrant, large-scale abstract compositions," organizers say.

The event is presented in collaboration with Bell Works Creative Director and Lead Designer Paola Zamudio.

Bell Labs' own music history and Potter's music-inspired work come together in the exhibit, the organizers say. Bell Works is the re-imagined site of the Bell Labs research facility.

Potter is an illustrator and painter from Monmouth County. Her work revolves around music, often including large-scale paintings, gig posters, album artwork, and her specialty - live performance drawing. Check out Potter's Facebook page.

Bell Labs has its own rich musical history, organizers say. Max Mathews developed the first widely-used program to enable a computer to create music. In 1970, he collaborated with composer Richard Moore on the hybrid system “GROOVE,” which focused on live performance, organizers of the exhibit say.

Potter's process works in reverse, as she examines sound and translates it through the tools of paint and print. Like Mathews, her work represents the interest in interpreting sound through a new lens.

Potter is a member of the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, The Guild of Creative Art, and the Art Council of Princeton. Haley graduated from Pratt Institute in 2017, and has been drawing Jersey music ever since.

“Groove” also features the sculptures of Sarah Mehoyas that use salvaged modular steel walls from Bell Labs.
