Funeral Arrangements Set For Longtime Sussex Firefighter

SUSSEX, NJ - Funeral arrangements have been set for a longtime Sussex Fire Department member who died suddenly last week just hours after he responded to back-to-back fire calls.

Anthony “Tony” Cornelius Duivenvoorde, 62, a member of the Sussex fire department and longtime Wantage resident, died in his home from an apparent heart attack after responding to the fire calls on April 12, the Stillwater Area Volunteer Fire Company said in a statement.

Duivenvoorde worked as a security guard for Comet Security in Vernon and previously worked as an assistant manager at Foodtown, per his obituary.

“Tony was a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed playing golf,” his obituary reads. “Above all else, Tony was a well-known figure in the community, often putting himself before others and always willing to offer a helping hand to whomever asked.”

A memorial will be held at the Sussex Fire House (25 Loomis Ave.) on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be Friday, April 21, 2023 at the firehouse at 11 a.m. The cremation will be private. A fire department service will be Thursday at 7:15 p.m. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Sussex Fire Department.
