Man Dies In Hopatcong House Fire, 2 Officers Treated For Smoke Inhalation: PD

Multiple fire companies responded to a blaze in the borough at around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning.

HOPATCONG, NJ — An early-morning home fire in Hopatcong on Monday claimed the life of a 64-year-old man, officials said. Two police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire broke out within the 300 block of Lakeside Avenue in the Northwood section of the borough, officials said. Someone called first responders just before 12:30 a.m., according to Hopatcong Police.

The home was fully engulfed in flames "with heavy smoke conditions" when emergency responders arrived, police said. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, they located the man, identified as Robert Powers, deceased in the home.

Two Hopatcong police officers were taken to the hospital and released after inhaling smoke, officials added. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no other injuries were reported.

Several other local fire departments assisted Hopatcong Police, Fire, and EMS at the scene, including: Andover Boro, Andover Township, Byram, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, Netcong, Roxbury, and Stanhope.
