Inspired by the oldest daughter of long-time Oak Ridge residents and Homestead Sprinkler owners, Dennis and Michele Elmers, the goal of Rebecca's Homestead to create an inclusive and sustainable community by providing adults affected with developmental disabilities housing, training, and a self-sufficient lifestyle, through on-site farming and hospitality employment opportunities. Initial plans for Rebecca’s Homestead include the conversion of a rural farm with a residential facility and barn that, in the future, may be rented for special events, as well as a horse stable and chickens. Stable space will be made available to rent and the eggs will be available for sale to aid in sustaining the residents’ cost of living expenses.

The need for residential programs like Rebecca’s Homestead is great in New Jersey and beyond. Right now, the State of New Jersey has more than 8,000 adults affected by disabilities awaiting housing. Sadly, there are still more adults who don’t even qualify for these State wait lists.

The Elmers’ dream is to provide a more secure and positive future for Rebecca and her friends. This residential home will house men and women affected by disabilities. The Homestead will become the residence and training facility for developmentally disabled adults who will contribute to the daily operations of the farm. The solution lies in the continued training and support for this special target audience. Their pride of ownership in living in and operating the Homestead as a self-sufficient lifestyle through hospitality and farming will help to provide peace of mind for their family’s as well.
