Snow, Winter Weather Could Hit Hopatcong, Sparta

Residents may see up to three inches of snow by Friday, the National Weather Service forecasted, with Sparta Schools closed for the day.

HOPATCONG, NJ — Hopatcong and Sparta residents could see up to two inches of snow fall with a storm expected to wind down by Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

Ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory to run from 7 p.m. on Thursday to 1 p.m. on Friday. That advisory called for up to three inches of snow in some sections of Sussex County.

Sparta Schools announced a closure ahead of the storm on Thursday evening in an alert, with Hopatcong Schools delayed two hours as of Thursday night, according to the district's website.

The storm is expected to begin as snow before midnight Friday, before becoming sleet, the National Weather Service forecasted.

There could also be wind gusts up to 30 mph from the storm, the National Weather Service predicted.

Freezing rain and sleet may continue until noon, with rain and snow a possibility until 4 p.m. and a high of 38 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

Into Friday: Snow likely between 10pm and midnight, then sleet. Low around 26. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Friday: Freezing rain and sleet before noon, then a chance of rain and snow between noon and 4pm. High near 38. East wind 5 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.2 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 16. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 31. West wind around 5 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 19. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph after midnight.
