Sussex County Under 'Flood Warning' Through Tuesday Afternoon

SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ — Rains are expected to continue steadily throughout Sussex County through Tuesday evening, possibly dropping up to another two inches, on top of two or four inches that may have already accumulated in the area as of Tuesday morning.

According to National Weather Service forecasts for Hopatcong and Sparta and multiple weather statements issued as of Tuesday morning, there is a Hazardous Weather Outlook, Flash Flood Watch through 5 p.m. and Flood Warning through 3 p.m., a "warning" meaning that flooding could be imminent.

As part of Hopatcong’s and Sparta’s Flood Warnings, which applies as well to towns throughout Sussex County, the National Weather Service has recorded that so far, between 1.5 to 3.5 inches of rain have fallen in the areas where Flood Warnings have been issued, throughout the entire region for Warren and Sussex Counties, as well as Northern Hunterdon County, Western Morris County and Northwestern Somerset County.

In Hopatcong and Sparta through Tuesday afternoon, heavy rain is expected with possible new rainfall of between 1 to 2 inches, the potential of wind gusts up to 20 mph, while temperatures hover at around 58 degrees in Hopatcong and 60 in Sparta.

Overnight into Wednesday, another half inch of rain could fall in Hopatcong and Sparta, though the winds are likely to drop back to 15 mph, with an overnight low of 51 degrees in Sparta and 50 in Hopatcong.

Mostly cloudy skies are predicted for Wednesday, while temperatures rise to around 61 degrees in Sparta and 59 in Hopatcong, while winds remain between 10 to 15 mph.

After an overnight low of 42 degrees in both Sparta and Hopatcong, sunny skies are expected to make a comeback on Thursday and the winds calm to 5 mph, with a high of 57 in Hopatcong and 60 in Sparta.
