Hurricane-Force Winds Reported In NJ During Weekend Storm: Rutgers

HIGH POINT STATE PARK, NJ — A hurricane-speed wind gust of 82 miles per hour was reported Saturday in New Jersey as a powerful winter storm blew across the state, according to reports.

As the winter storm with winds of 40-50 miles per hour roared across New Jersey on Saturday, a gust of 82 miles per hour was measured at High Point Monument in Sussex County, according to the Rutgers NJ Weather Network.

A Category 1 Hurricane can be designated when there are sustained winds — not just gusts — between 74 and 95 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The reported gust was the highest recorded at the monument since recording of conditions there began in 2008, New Jersey State Climatologist David Robinson told NJ.com. Gusts of 65 and 75 miles per hour were also marked at the monument Saturday, according to Robinson.

Little Egg Harbor and Fortescue had gusts of 55 miles per hour on Saturday. Cape May West and Wantage, New Jersey saw gusts of 53 miles per hour, Harvey Cedars 52 miles per hour, and Lower Alloways Creek had winds measured at 49 miles per hour, according to Rutgers NJ Weather Network.
