SPARTA, NJ — With the holiday weekend ahead and summer overall an ideal time to refresh with some creamy goodness, Sparta boasts some ice cream choices at different places for the Independence Day weekend and beyond.

Each person in the United States eats about 23 gallons of ice cream on an average each year, which was among the reasons why the International Dairy Foods Association says July was set by Presidential Proclamation in 1984 as National Ice Cream Month, with the third Sunday in July celebrated as National Ice Cream Day.

Alpine Creamery in Lake Mohawk’s White Deer Plaza is a favorite, known for its more than 50 homemade ice cream flavors, sherbets, Italian ices, milkshakes, slushees, quarts to go, soft serve, twisters and more. Then take a stroll on The Boardwalk with one of Alpine Creamery’s tasty treats.

Sparta Dairy is another stop in Sparta’s downtown on 28 Sparta Avenue, with a wide selection of hard ice creams, some seasonal, some standard. They say it’s best to call ahead to Sparta Dairy at 973-512-3360 about a particular flavor or to inquire about their selection of custom ice cream cakes. Anderson Farms, on Route 15/Lafayette Road has an ice cream shop in its farm store with homemade ice cream and more than a dozen specialty flavors like wildflower honey, carrot cake, maple candied bacon and more. Anderson Farms’ ice cream can be scooped into a cone, cup or sundae; enjoyed in an ice cream sandwich; or blended into a milkshake or float.
