LIVINGSTON, NJ — More than 2,000 Livingston residents have signed a petition against a proposed redevelopment plan for part of South Livingston Avenue.

The plan would put 276 units of residential housing, as well as retail and restaurant space, in the area of 45 South Livingston Ave., which currently hosts a Walgreens and other businesses.

But residents who posted a petition online said that the project should be scaled down, as it will add too many residents and cars to an already busy area.

"Our schools are already overcrowded," says the petition. "Our children are poised to learn intrailers for the next academic year. Our water quality is already extremely poor. Power capacity is unclear. Our police, fire fighters, and emergency personnel are over stretched. Traffic, especially at peak times, is outrageous and dangerous up and down Livingston Avenue.""

"45 South Livingston Avenue is not the place to house almost 300 rental units sitting on top of a row of stores," notes the petition. "A five-story building is an outrageous proposal for this site."

Signers of the petition left comments about increased traffic and about the schools.

Petitioners said they had told the Township Council of the concerns and expect to continue attending meetings.
