Francis J. 'Frank' Carini, Former Golden Gloves Boxer, Dies At 87

Services for West Long Branch resident will be held privately.

Francis J. "Frank" Carini of West Long Branch died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Atria in Tinton Falls. He was 87.

Born in Manhattan, to the late Paul and Desolina Carini, he was one of three brothers raised on the lower East Side. His brothers Louis and Raymond both preceded him in death.

In 1948, Frank received his professional boxing license. The fee back then was $15. He pursued his boxing career fighting in two divisions, welterweight and lightweight. Frank propelled his boxing career to the Golden Gloves. His most historic fight venue was at Madison Square Garden in 1949. After his boxing career, he joined the Mason Tenders Local 23 in New York City and retired in 1992.

Frank met and married his childhood sweetheart Marie Cardanchise, who was also from the Little Italy section of New York City. They married on June 7, 1952 and moved into an apartment on Grand Street in Little Italy, where they had lived before moving in 1963 to Matawan to raise their family. After retirement he and Marie moved to the Anchorage in Long Branch in 1997.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Marie Carini; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Marie Carini; his daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Michael Musto; several nieces, Regina, his godchild, Paulette, Debbie, Noreen and Maryliz, his nephews, Louis and Raymond, and sister-in-law Daisy Carini, and their families who currently live in the New York, New Jersey areas.
