LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Monmouth County's SPCA won't work you like a dog before they pay you. The organization has offered Long Branch residents money to get their pit bull or pit bull mixes spayed or neutered.

You'll earn $100 at surgery discharge and receive an additional $100 at a follow-up exam. You must be able to prove Long Branch residency with a driver's license or utility bill. Also, bring a photo of the dog and owner together. The program takes place at the Vogel Veterinary Care Center inside the Monmouth County SPCA (260 Wall St., Eatontown).

The Monmouth County SPCA teamed up with the Little Silver Animal Hospital Foundation For Animals to create the Pit Stop Program. The program fights overpopulation.

If the program is successful, it will hopefully expand to other New Jersey cities, the Monmouth County SPCA says. Dogs will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, placed with flea and tick preventative and given post-op meds.

Funding for the program is limited. If you're interested, email [email protected] and include a photo of your dog. You will then fill out a simple form and be contacted in one or two business days.
