Long Branch Native, One Of Rutgers's 1st Women In Science, Dies

LONG BRANCH, NJ — Carol P. Henkel died Dec. 23 at age 89. Henkel, born in Long Branch, was one of the first women to receive a Bachelor's of Science from Rutgers University.

She studied animal husbandry and was instrumental in developing therapeutic horseback riding in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. One of her students became a gold medalist in the 1996 Summer Paralympic Games.

Henkel was also a judge and USA team supporter in the 1999 World Dressage Championships for Riders with Disabilities in Denmark, according to her obituary.

She is survived by daughters Nancy (Rich) Meyers, Kathy (Andy) Oravetz and Jody (Tony) Bonazzi; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a brother, Clyde A. “Cap” (Mary Jane) Pearce. She was married to the late John H. Henkel for 60 years.
