LWV/Harvard off free CMI Workshop to High School teachers 4/6/22

Professor David Moss presents CMI Workshop free to High School Teachers, sponsored by the League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters(LWV) is sponsoring a virtual professional development workshop by the Harvard University’s Case Method Institute (CMI) on Wednesday, April 6, 7 pm-8:30 pm. It is free to all high school teachers interested in learning the methodology in employing case studies in history to deepen students’ understanding of American Democracy. The zoom program will be conducted by published author and award-winning Harvard Professor David Moss. Interested teachers can register at https://bit.ly/LWVGEncoreComm.

Case studies have been successfully used by the Harvard Business School and many other higher learning institutions to successfully teach students and foster a deep understanding of subject matter. The CMI was founded to bring this teaching methodology to high school students. The April 6 program is entitled, “James Madison, the Federal Negative and the Making of the US Constitution.” The discussion features the debate held at the 1878 Constitutional Convention on these iconic questions:

  • Should the federal government have veto power over state laws?
  • How much power- and what kind of power—should the federal government have over the states?

The program is an offshoot of a partnership the CMI formed with the LWV Greenwich chapter in 2019. It serves as a preview to the virtual summertime CMI professional development workshop for League nominated teachers of U.S. history, government and civics. Over the years, 115 LWV chapters in 33 states nominated teachers throughout the country to attend these informative workshops. Any teacher wishing to be nominated for the summer workshop taking place on Saturday, August 30, 2022, can contact the Monmouth County LWV at [email protected].
